Victories and Losses

Recently, our national pastors have been holding special open-air services in each of our village churches. At Buteraniro Bible Baptist Church, fifteen people were saved over one weekend, including the local witchdoctor! After accepting Jesus as his personal Savior, he brought all of his witchcraft paraphernalia and burned it. On that Sunday, 180 people attended the services, including the converted witchdoctor and his son!

Also during the school break, the Mbarara Bible Baptist Church held their Holiday Bible Time (like Vacation Bible School). Our son, David, who attends Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Missouri was here working with us over the summer. So he and Sylvia went down to Mbarara to help with Holiday Bible Time. David was in charge of organizing the program – complete with games, skits, memory verses, puppets, and Bible lessons, and he did great job! They had over 30 children in attendance each day, and many decisions were made for the Lord. David has now returned to Springfield to continue his Bible College studies.

As Holiday Bible Time was getting started in Mbarara, Pastor Naboth was informed that his father-in-law had died in an accident. He was 68 and was disabled (he had lost a leg about 14 years ago). His house was in a valley, and heavy rains caused a flash flood that swept through his home. As he tried to get out, he was swept off his foot, pinned by the water pressure, and drowned. He was Catholic and unsaved, so Naboth and Esther were very upset to hear of his sudden death. They had witnessed to him many times and were planning to visit him again soon. Now he has gone into eternity forever lost.

I went with Pastor Naboth and Esther to the burial, which was attended by several hundred friends and relatives. The service was led by a Catholic priest, but they did give me a chance to speak briefly. I opened the Bible and shared with them how they needed to accept Jesus as Savior before it is too late. I told them that they needed to make a decision now while they are still alive because the prayers of the priest after their death will not help them get into Heaven. The Catholic majority crowd jeered and shouted until I gave up speaking and sat down. It was so sad! Naboth and Ester continue to pray for their lost family members to be saved. Please pray that they will have more opportunities to witness to those still living.

Yours in Uganda,
