Prayer Letter
September 2007
Dear Praying Friends:
This ancient land, following the Julian
calendar, celebrated the year 2000 with lots of flag waving
and
celebrations. Ethiopia is about the size of Texas, New
Mexico, and Oklahoma.
As
the Ethiopians were bringing in the new millennium, our
missionary team was in Western Ethiopia in a frontier town
called Gambella. The Baro River splits Gambella into two
parts. About 30 people met their end last year by local
crocodiles in the river. During our time there we baptized
15 believers, but we made sure there were no crocs in the
stream.
We had ten days of teaching the Nuers who are from Southern
Sudan. Some of the 25 preachers came down river for several
days and others traveled overland from the Dimma Refugee
Camp, which is run by a UN agency.
Living quarters in Gambella are sparse for foreigners, but
we found accommodation in a local mission guest house. Karon
accompanied us, and kept food on the table for us as we fed
the preachers spiritually. We can see real growth in the
Nuers as they only want to follow in the “Bible teaching of
Baptist doctrines”.
Southern Sudan may soon be in a civil war with the Islamic
Revolutionary government of the North. The North has tried
to “Islamatize” the South, which is basically “Christian.”
Two and a half million people have died in the last 20 years
in this conflict.
Prayer requests:
-
Recognition by the Ethiopian government
of the Baptist church in Fitche
-
Unity among the Nuers as they trust the
Lord’s guidance
-
The Gospel outreach here in Fitche and
surrounding area
Thank you for financial support and prayers
for Ethiopia.
