Ethiopian and Sudan Report
January 2010
On November 22, 2009, I observed my 73rd birthday with Karon, and
Rex and Ginnie Switzer on our mission trip to minister to the Nuer
churches in Western Ethiopia and Southern Sudan.
We
traveled in 4x4 vehicles and camped under the tree nearest to the
mud and grass churches in four different villages. A swamp that
stretches as far as the eye could see was the site for the baptism
of 26 believers. We walked through ankle deep muck to reach a place
big enough to get a person under the water. But before any baptism
could take place, a herd of about 80 Nuer cattle trekked through our
prospective water hole. We found a better water hole a little
farther into the swamp and the 26 believers from three different
Baptist churches were baptized. An additional 16 believers were
baptized in the Bora River.
We
were able to encourage 8 churches as we provided training for 200
church members from these churches; four pastors were ordained,
about 1,000 children were taught, and about 4,500 people viewed the
two hour “Jesus” film in the Nuer language in the ten presentations
of the video.
The Baptist church members in Maiwut killed a sheep for the four
missionaries. We were glad to share it with the church.
The Lord willing, we have future plans to go farther into Sudan and
build up more of these young Baptist churches.
To those of you who gave garden seeds, we want you to know that they
were received with great thanksgiving. Thank you for letting us be
your missionaries in Ethiopia and Southern Sudan.
